'Hair' is a project comprised of photos that show the variety of textures and styles of hair.
Photos by Selina McCallum.
Growing up, I had a lot of trouble with my hair. While all the girls in my class grew their hair to be like Rapunzel, my hair was in braids that wouldn't grow passed my shoulders. The reason for this was because my hair type is 4b, which means my hair is bouncy, tiny coils that shrink when its dry. To fit in, I straightened my hair until it was completely damaged. It was only when I shaved the sides of my head in high school that I appreciated the beauty of my hair. This project is to showcase the different types of hair and hairstyles that makes a person who they are.

Week 4 | Theme: Event & Denim on Denim| Hairstyle: Box braids, Bun, & Dreads

I did this photoshoot for a club at the University of Windsor called CAOS (Caribbean and African Organization of Students). The shoot was to help promote their party, Denim on Denim, happening on November 18th. CAOS was established at the University of Windsor in 2004 and has grown bigger each year.

I joined CAOS in my first year of University. At the time, I was really shy and still trying to figure out who I was. CAOS definitely helped me with feeling comfortable in my skin and being unapologetically black. Being a part of a group with other black students helped me see the beauty in being Black that I never saw growing up. I was also able to connect with other girls who had the same trouble with their hair as I did.

I previously mentioned that I was surrounded in a sea of straight hair growing up which really affected how I saw curly hair. Especially being a part of a mixed family, it didn't help that my cousins didn't have to deal with hair like mine. It was only until I was 17 that I got box braids in my hair. So coming into University, I was able to get tips from other girls who knew how to take care of their hair better than I did.

What I love about being a part of CAOS is the understanding we all have for each other. I love the family vibe that CAOS works hard to maintain. The photoshoot was a fun time for us to relax from midterms, look good and feel good. Most of us love to look our best when we attend an event and definitely when we host our own. The denim on denim themed party is new for us this year and we're all very excited to have UWindsor students attend wearing their best outfits.

This was my favourite photoshoot by far because I got to work with incredible black models who are not oppressed by the idea that their hair is not beautiful.
