'Hair' is a project comprised of photos that show the variety of textures and styles of hair.
Photos by Selina McCallum.
Growing up, I had a lot of trouble with my hair. While all the girls in my class grew their hair to be like Rapunzel, my hair was in braids that wouldn't grow passed my shoulders. The reason for this was because my hair type is 4b, which means my hair is bouncy, tiny coils that shrink when its dry. To fit in, I straightened my hair until it was completely damaged. It was only when I shaved the sides of my head in high school that I appreciated the beauty of my hair. This project is to showcase the different types of hair and hairstyles that makes a person who they are.

Throughout the blog I have talked a lot about hair, confidence and self-love. These three topics to me come as a package deal because many times growing up I felt that you could not have one without the other. For example, without having the hair type/style you wanted, you would not have confidence and as a result, not have the ability to love yourself. This post is about walking down memory lane and giving my younger self advice if I could go back in time.

Before I do so, I want to introduce to you the model in the photos. Her name is Jay and she is a 3rd year Electrical engineering student at the University of Windsor. The reason why I wanted to feature her on my blog is because a lot of the girls from my childhood looked like Jay. I went to a school in a neighbourhood that had a big population of people from India, Pakistan, and the Middle East.  There were a sea of girls that had hair like Jay.

The first thing I would tell myself is that different does not mean 'ugly' or 'not good enough'. Different does not mean that you are not good enough or that there is something 'wrong'. I would also tell myself that each person with all their different characteristics makes them a unique individual. Furthermore, different means an opportunity to share your differences with other people. It is a chance to educate and enlighten other people who do not know or understand certain things about you and people like you.

My final message to my younger self is that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and you deserve to see that within you.
